No amount of academic dialogue will erase the geopolitical realities of competing ambitions in the Indian Ocean or disputed borders in the Himalayas. The structural contest for influence across Asia is permanent. China’s economic scale and India’s demographic momentum mean these two giants will gravitational-pull against one another for generations.

Physics cannot be negotiated away.

But physics also teaches us about equilibrium. Two massive bodies can orbit the same sun without colliding, provided their momentum is balanced by invisible, stabilizing forces. Dialogue is that stabilizing force.

When the Foreign Secretary steps out of the lecture hall and into the crisp Beijing air, the border has not moved an inch. The troops are still deployed. The strategic anxieties remain printed in bold ink across military intelligence briefings in both capitals.

And yet, something imperceptible has shifted.

A door was pushed open just a fraction of an inch. Through that crack, light spilled onto a floor that had been kept in darkness for far too long.
